What's in A GIEP?

Samples Only!
The following are samples of types of things that MIGHT appear in a GIEP. Please understand that they do not represent the complete GIEP, or the ONLY things found in an GIEP. Pam Nelson and R. Paul put lists together for your use. Please feel free to submit other examples that would help to illustrate a GIEP in Pennsylvania. Thank you.

These are examples, not exact wordings:

• READING: School will provide a (be specific) reading program for my child. (assumes you have had the school test for exact reading levels).
• MATHEMATICS: Child will attend the next grade level for math class in place of and during the child's regular math period.
• GEOGRAPHY. Student will go to the gifted teacher to work on his/her special Interest. Perhaps it would be studying and memorizing all the oceans.
• ALGEBRA. Child will take in 6th grade. To be taught by (not specific person, but by job title
• AP ENGLISH. Child will be assigned to AP English
• FOREIGN LANGUAGE. Child will take advanced class or, will have available a distance learning opportunity.
• INDEPENDENT STUDY CONTRACT.
• SPECIFIC OPPORTUNITY. Such as special opportunities provided by local college (but not at school district expense).

A few examples from Riverside, Beaver County:

• A student is assigned to the next regular level of math AND is allowed to go to the gifted center or room if s/he knows the subject being discussed that day. The student will not be responsible for all homework but will take all tests.
• A student is assigned to an advanced (or higher grade) level of English AND may pre-test out of doing the regular spelling or grammar assignments each week.
• A student will be excused from the regular 7th grade English classroom one week every grading period to go a special course in very accelerated Reading with discussion group and will also be writing papers.
• A student will be given access to the library or gifted room 1 period a day for the purpose of independent study in History. S/he will be allowed internet access and advanced level books and will be monitored by the gifted teacher to assure that progress is being made.
• A student will come to school early for a video-teleconference course in AP C++ Computer Science. The course will be taught, tested and graded by a college instructor remotely and monitored by the gifted teacher.
• A second grade student will be given 3rd grade math in the regular 2nd grade classroom INSTEAD OF regular second grade math. (while the other students are doing "seatwork") The student will not have to copy the problems out of the book but will be given actual pages from a book on which to work and write the answers.
